Elementary
First through fifth graders at Portland Lutheran School build on the basics they?ve begun to develop in the early years. Coursework becomes more topically oriented to the humanities, math and science.
Writing skills are a priority for elementary students. Appropriate to their level, students are guided through the entire process of developing a paper, from brainstorming ideas to rough draft, editing, rewriting and the final version.
The math curriculum stresses concepts and geometry as well as computation. Using arithmetic and problem solving, students come to understand real-life applications for math like money, time and temperature calculations. They?re also introduced to multiplication and division, weights and measurements, and probability and fractions.
Religion class is integrated into daily curriculum, focused on Biblical stories and the impact of Jesus on the students? lives.
Elementary students in first through sixth grades may participate in an enrichment curriculum designed to give them an opportunity to study a specific topic in more depth on a weekly basis. As part of the special program, the classroom teacher arranges for guest speakers, artists and musicians from the community to visit the classroom and share expertise related to the curriculum.
